Artist Note ————— There is a constant swirl of potential and decay surrounding human beings and my art strives to make visual documentation of this. The work operates within the historical tradition of drawing as a tool to define ourselves, record the world around us and to create, both true and fictitious, realities. I make large scale, figurative drawings with graphite pencil and oil paint on paper. Visually, the work embraces motion, multiplicity and warped anatomy. A goal is to let the linework flow free and the crosshatching be fast and loose. Color is a vehicle to accentuate the line. I am interested in simultaneously overlapping the physical and metaphorical aspects of people and depicting this intersection within the same space. My drawings exist as ponderings on the here and now and discuss, through line, exertion, paradox and connectivity within contemporary existence. Bio —- Matthew Brennan (b. 1983) is a visual artist with a process rooted in drawing. The work has been shown throughout the United States since 2005 and he is based out of Brooklyn, NY. His current series deals with human figures in moments of momentum through situations of struggle.
