Bodies in Motion

Bodies in Motion exists to inspire artists with beautifully crafted images of the human body in motion. Created by artist and educator Scott Eaton, it has grown into a library of 150,000+ images used by illustrators, graphic novelists, sculptors, painters, storyboard and character artists through to teams at Netflix Animation, Disney, and Industrial Light & Magic. Scott began photographing sequences of athletes and dancers in 2009 to support his renowned Anatomy for Artists course. Inspired by Eadweard Muybridge's pioneering motion studies, and their value to his own anatomy study, he set out to create a modern equivalent: studio-lit, high-resolution, and curated with the artist in mind. What began as a resource for his anatomy lectures has grown into a comprehensive library of photographic sequences, dynamic 3D scans, facial expression references, the complete Muybridge archive, and a rich gallery of community created artwork referenced from the site's content. Scott continues to develop new ways to navigate it — from QuickDraw's timed practice sessions to innovative tools like PoseSearch and ImageExplore. Every image is lit by Scott personally — sculpting with light to reveal the contours, anatomy, and form of the body as it moves. The goal is to create images that compel artists to draw, study, and understand the body at a deeper level, improving their figurative work along the way.
